Without a doubt, we are advocates of merino wool clothing. Having used it for years in our clothing design and manufacturing business, we love its versatility and longevity. We do appreciate that not everyone shares our passion for merino fabric though. So, we thought we’d spend a moment to share with (and convince) you why your first option should be to purchase merino wool clothing.
Why We Use Only 100% NZ Merino Wool Fabric
Our women’s clothing collections take their inspiration from our beautiful local environment. With flora and fauna designs taking pride of place on our ponchos, scarves, mitts and headbands, it makes sense that we’d want to use a fabric which also reflected our countryside and values.
The qualities of merino we love and wanted our garments to have include:
- 100% natural and locally sourced
- Flame resistant
- Renewable, compostable and biodegradable
- Long lasting
- High quality
- Odour resistant
- Naturally wicking
There is an elephant in the room though that we’d like to address and that’s cost. Merino is costlier than many other fabrics, including synthetic options. There are many clothing and face mask manufacturers that do use synthetic fabric because it is cheaper and provides other benefits they feel are important. As for why we choose not to use synthetic fabric, we’ll cover that next.
Why Jill Main NZ Won’t Use Synthetic Fabric
There are some advantages to using synthetic fabric: it’s cheaper, easy to source and washes well. However, it is not something that we will ever choose to use here at Jill Main NZ. This is because we want our clothing and accessory ranges to be as friendly as possible to both people and the environment.
Let’s take a look at our merino face masks for instance. Made with 100% merino fabric, they are easy to breathe through, will last for plenty of wears and washes, will help you keep cool in summer and warm in winter, are gentle, non itchy and soft against skin and contain no nasty chemicals or solvents. Having something that close to your face, you want to know without a doubt that it will be safe, and our face masks certainly are!
Why don’t you head over to our clothing store and choose one or more pieces of merino clothing to try at home? We just know you’ll fall in love with merino fabric just as much as we have!
